John Bruzon

Pianist and Educator

Born and educated in Gibraltar, John Bruzon won a bursary which enabled him to study at Trinity College of Music, London, with the distinguished

British pianist Irene Kohler—herself a pupil of Eduard Steuermann, who was a celebrated student of the legendary Ferruccio Busoni.

John Bruzon's performance career encompasses both classical and lighter musical arenas. Notable engagements include performances at London’s Wigmore Hall and a series of classical recital programmes aboard the QE2 during a world cruise, where his engaging introductions created a wonderful rapport with audiences.

Whilst still at college, John replaced the pianist and composer Donald Swann as accompanist to the Greek soprano Lilli Malandraki. He toured the UK with her in a programme entitled "Songs and Tales from the Islands of Greece", with performances at London's Commonwealth Institute and the Mermaid Theatre.

In the classical sphere, Bruzon partnered with English National Opera baritone Derek Hammond-Stroud for the Fairfield Halls 20th Anniversary Celebrity Lunchtime Concerts. Impressed by his musicianship, Hammond- Stroud subsequently engaged Bruzon to perform Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise for the Schubert Society of Great Britain, later inviting Bruzon to become a regular accompanist for his busy London teaching practice.

Equally at home in the theatre, John has performed extensively as a cabaret accompanist and as Musical Director for numerous musicals, pantomimes, and variety shows. For over two decades, he was the go-to accompanist for popular entertainers and cabaret artists across the UK and internationally— with engagements taking him as far afield as Thailand. Some of his collaborative partners have included Dora Bryan, Jean Fergusson, Su Pollard, Marti Caine, Paul O'Grady (Lily Savage), and Dr. Evadne Hinge (Hinge and Bracket).

John is now a well-loved and popular fixture of the South East and Brighton concert scene. He is frequently called upon for his reliability and brilliant recital programmes—sometimes at very short notice!

He is a passionate and inspirational teacher and an excellent communicator who thoroughly enjoys encouraging and developing his students’ talents and technical skills. He remains devoted to passing on the discipline and artistic passion he received from his mentor Irene Kohler, to whom he owes so much.
