A native of Malton, North Yorkshire, Anthony Wilson studied the piano, violin, and organ privately and at St. Peter’s School, York. As a teenager, he played for services at St. Michael’s Church in Malton, as well as in the school chapel.
Heading to Nottingham University to study medicine, he continued to play the organ at St John’s, Beeston, as well as in the university chapel. After three years, and gaining a BMedSci degree, he decided to study for a BA in Music, also at Nottingham. Whilst an undergraduate, he was university organ scholar, organist at St Mary’s, Clifton, with its fine Marcussen organ, and was accompanist to Loughborough University choir.
Work with the young musicians in his church, as well as his love for music, led Anthony to a Secondary Music PGCE at the Institute of Education in London, as well as an organ scholarship at St. Mary Abbots Church, Kensington. Here he played for Choral Matins, accompanying the professional choir, and Evensong, preceded by a short organ recital.
After qualifying as a teacher, Anthony worked in secondary schools in Hertfordshire and London, before becoming Head of Music at Leicester High School for Girls and gaining an MA in Music Education. After a brief spell as a freelance musician, he moved to London to take up the post of Director of Music at the Mount School in Mill Hill.
Holding all these posts concurrently with church positions, he decided to semi-retire in 2014. This led to a move to East Sussex, as Director of Music at St. Peter’s Church, Bexhill-on-Sea, and then as Organist and Teacher of Music at Roedean School, Brighton. Anthony now divides his time between classroom teaching, piano and organ teaching at Roedean, as well as being Musical Director of St. Mary’s Church, Willingdon.
Anthony is a Fellow of the London College of Music (organ) and an Associate of the Royal College of Organists (organ) and Royal Schools of Music (piano).
