Regina Cœli

The Easter prayer Regina Cœli (Queen of Heaven in Latin) is a wonderful tribute to our Lord’s resurrection and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although its origins are unknown, it dates back to the 13th century.

The Regina Cœli is one of four antiphons (short liturgical texts sung or chanted, in a responsorial pattern) dedicated to Our Lady. It is often sung as a hymn and has numerous musical settings in its original Latin text.

Traditionally, it is prayed standing, in place of  the Angelus, during the Easter Season from Holy Saturday until Pentecost.

℟. Joy to thee O Queen of heaven, alleluia.
    He whom thou wast meet to bear, alleluia.
    As he promised, hath arisen, alleluia.
    Pour for us to God thy prayer, alleluia.
   

℣. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.

℟. For the Lord is risen indeed, alleluia.

    O God, who, by the Resurrection of thy Son,
    our Lord Jesus Christ, hast brought joy
    to the whole world; grant, that through
    His Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may
    obtain the joys of life everlasting.
